Chiesa di Sant Angelo
Lugano, Italy

"The church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is a late Romanesque religious building located in Lugano Centro.

Interior
(Front of Sanctuary)
"The church was built from 17 February 1499 [1] . It arose on the initiative of the citizens of the village, in thanksgiving for two important events. In the first place, the church wanted to celebrate the renewed harmony among the citizens after the struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines, sworn in 1496 in memory of the one stipulated among the Lugano factions in 1445 on the impulse of Fra 'Silvestro da Siena, a disciple of San Bernardino da Siena . Secondly, it was intended to thank the Observant Franciscans for their work of charity during the plague of 1498 [2] .

Interior
(Rear of Sanctuary)

"On the partition is the grandiose " Passion and Crucifixion " by Bernardino Luini(the most famous Renaissance fresco of Switzerland , dated 1529 ). The current high altar is a beautiful eighteenth-century wooden work , from the convent of Santa Croce in Como and donated to the Angioli church in 1839 ." "The facade of the church of Sant'Angelo is a salient one . It is subdivided into its bands superimposed by a high cornice supported, in the lower part, by columns with Tuscan capitals interspersed with the aforementioned columns, there are three portals , with the central one bigger than the two side ones. The upper fascia of the façade, instead, is decorated by a cornice that recalls a serliana ideally supported by six pilasters with Ionic capitals . Above the central window, within a niche , there is the statue of the Immaculate At the top of the façade there is a triangular pediment with a wrought iron cross. Statues by Gerolamo Prestinari , sculptor active in the Sacred Mountain of Varese complete the decoration In particular, we can see:
